New Year's Resolution - Be a Good Sheep
As we enter the new year, many people make resolutions to improve their lives. For people of faith, a worthy resolution can be to follow the example of sheep who trust and obey their shepherd. Sheep are known for being gentle, quiet creatures who find safety and provision by staying close to their protector. As the Bible says, “The Lord is my shepherd, I lack nothing” (Psalm 23:1). What does it mean for us to be good sheep who follow our Divine Shepherd?
First, good sheep listen to the voice of their shepherd. They learn to recognize his voice and follow him when he calls. As Jesus said, “My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me” (John 10:27). We can strive to hear God’s voice by regularly reading His word, praying, and seeking wise counsel from other believers. As we tune our ears to the Shepherd’s gentle guidance, we will learn to discern His direction.
Second, good sheep trust the shepherd’s judgment. Sheep lack the intelligence and vision to understand the complexities of life. They must depend on the wisdom of their shepherd to lead them to food, water and safety. As Isaiah 40:11 says, the Lord “tends his flock like a shepherd: He gathers the lambs in his arms and carries them close to his heart; he gently leads those that have young.” We can resolve this year to trust in God’s perfect knowledge and surrender our limited understanding to His care.
Finally, good sheep follow the shepherd’s direction. Once they know their shepherd’s voice and trust his leadership, sheep obediently go where he guides them. As Psalm 23 declares, “He leads me in paths of righteousness for his name’s sake.” Jesus repeatedly calls us to follow Him down the narrow path of faith and obedience that leads to life. As we walk step-by-step in the footsteps of our Good Shepherd, we will find rest, renewal, and purpose for our journey.
In this new year, may we strive to be good sheep who hear, trust and follow our Divine Shepherd. By submitting our will to His perfect plan, we will find peace, provision and rest for our souls.
