ReMission: Reclaiming the Call to Evangelism
What is ReMission?
ReMission is an ongoing movement and annual conference organized by leaders within the Churches of Christ. Born out of a desire to refocus Christians on the work of evangelism, it aims to reignite a passion for leading souls to Jesus. The most recent two-day conference was hosted at the Pleasant Valley Church of Christ in Little Rock, Arkansas, drawing 586 attendees from 168 congregations across 23 states.
The Core Message
The central premise of ReMission was captured by Rick Atchley, a minister from Texas, who diagnosed a generational shift within the Churches of Christ. He noted that as the denomination moved away from the sectarian legalism of the past—specifically the belief that they were the “only ones going to heaven”—they inadvertently overcorrected, leading to a loss of urgency for evangelism. The movement asserts that this shift caused the church to lose its primary mission.
To correct this, ReMission seeks to forge a path forward that is neither strictly sectarian nor progressive. Instead, it challenges churches to:
Boldly proclaim both grace and truth.
Recover the authority of Scripture and the power of the Holy Spirit.
Refocus energy away from divisive political or social squabbles and back toward preaching the good news to the lost.
