The Instrument of Shame
The cross was never intended to be an emblem of faith. To a 1st-century Roman, it was the ultimate tool of state terror and public humiliation, designed to strip a person of their dignity and serve as a brutal warning. It was not something to be celebrated.
Today, we hold onto the cross not to glorify the execution, but because it represents the ultimate paradox of grace: God took the absolute darkest tool humanity could invent and turned it into the mechanism for our salvation.
It is the ultimate victory over worldly power.
