When Serving Tables Threatened the Gospel

In the early days of the church, as recounted in Acts 6:1-7, a challenge arose that threatened the unity and focus of the believers. The distribution of resources became a point of contention, potentially distracting from the primary mission of prayer and preaching.

Guided by the Holy Spirit, the apostles and the congregation wisely appointed seven Spirit-filled individuals to oversee these practical matters, allowing the apostles to focus on prayer and preaching.

This account offers valuable lessons for us today. It reminds us that the church is built on the foundation of prayer and the preaching of God's Word. These are the pillars that sustain and nourish our spiritual lives. It also highlights the importance of organized and efficient ministry, where each member plays a vital role, using their gifts for the common good. This includes active participation in the church's life, contributing to its growth and the fulfillment of its mission.

As we navigate the complexities of life and ministry, may we remember the example of the early church. May we prioritize prayer and the Word, seeking the Holy Spirit's guidance in all things. May we embrace our individual roles, serving one another with humility and love.
